It
was decided to construct two road tunnels as part of the general
plan for the preservation and development of the historical
Islamic area in Cairo. The tunnels aim at creating a
vehicular free surface region for tourism and pedestrians as well
as improving the environmental conditions.
Each
tunnel is 2.7 Km long extending between Salah Salem Street and
Opera Square in the city centre. Each tunnel has an internal
diameter of 8.35 m, thus one of the TBMs used in Metro Line 2 was
utilized for the construction of the tunnels.
The
cut and cover construction method was used in the execution of the
entrance and exit sections of each tunnel as well as the four
ventilation stations. Between the the cut and cover sections, the
twin tunnels were bored in generally sandy layer.
Emergency
exits were used every 100 m along the sidewalks. These exits are
provided with slide escapes to a gallery under the roadway. In
case of fire, these escapes will assist in the evacuation op
people to safely reach the ventilation stations which contain
lifts and stairs leading to the surface. A sprayed fireproof
lining to the tunnels was also incorporated to resist a 100 MW
fire. The operation of the tunnels is completely monitored by
a totally centralized Control Centre located inside the
tunnels.
The
project was inaugurated in 2001.
